Pass the parcel…

Spinach Parcels

Just a quick update to remind everyone how jolly tasty the food is here in the café (not that most people need reminding!).  Katie has just taken these bad boys out of the oven – spinach and cheese parcels.

They are as delicious as they look and are vegetarian too.  Usually found with  filo-pastry packaging, Katie used all-butter puff-pastry instead because it’s more satisfying and also makes much less mess.

This is the kind of thing we like to jam onto the ‘specials’ board but don’t forget all the usual stuff that’s available (check our menu here), and for the less hungry there’s always the option of just coffee and cake.  Look out for more different and delicious dishes as and when they spark Katie’s interest.  We look forward to seeing you!

A little bit about some Easter stuff

Some of our easter stuff

We’ve just got our Easter stuff in and as you can see some of it is jolly good fun.

From the makers of “Bochox” and “No Weight Gain Chocolate*” comes the innovative “Flat-pack Easter egg” along with a couple of other cheeky chocs.

We have some chocolate bunnies, some rather indulgent eggs and even some of the yummy mini-eggs from the chucklesome Edward Monkton.

Since Easter is a good time to indulge in chocolatey things, we took the opportunity to restock our incredibly popular truffles (Plain, Champaigne and Cappuccino flavours, all down from £3.75 to £3.50/box) and the snazzy range of Cachet dark chocolate bars (Lemon & Pepper, Orange & Almond, Blackberry & Ginger, and Pear & Almond).

So if you want some good chocolate and don’t want to settle for some mass-manufactured supermarket pap, dash in and say hello.  It might be eggsactly what you need…

Sorry, no more bookings!

Booking Calendar

Most restaurants accept bookings as it can be a real downer to get to your restaurant of choice and find there is no room for you and that your whole evening is ruined.

Our place is a café rather than a restaurant – it’s a friendly, relaxed and informal affair.  Recently however we’ve had a few grumbles from customers getting turned away; it must be frustrating to be turned away from what appears to be a half empty café.

Since we are open during the day and don’t have a narrow window of evening services, it’s very difficult to guarantee a reserved table without leaving it empty for anything up to an hour beforehand -  this simply isn’t sensible from a business perspective.

So we’ve taken the difficult decision to refuse bookings from now on.  We know it will be an unpopular choice with some people and we are truly sorry for any inconvenience it may cause.  However we also know it’ll be good news for lots of people that like to pop in on the spur of the moment.  It’s a tough job to balance this kind of thing – please forgive us for doing our best!

Celebrating Burns’ Night?

The new year sees Burns’ Night, a celebration of the birth of Scottish lyricist and poet Robert ‘Rabbie’ Burns.  Celebrated on the 25th January (or the closest weekend), it’s an event that is usually accompanied by lots of whisky and some traditional haggis. So it’s a good time to point out that Scotland also knocks [...]

We’d also like to thank everyone for their continued support and enthusiasm for our business.  We occasionally grumble about the [...]

Christmas at last…

Okay, we promised a spectacular Christmas section to drool over and delight in.  Sadly (and gladly!) we have been so overwhelmingly busy that we haven’t had time to prepare such an information extravaganza, so you’ll have to make do with this nice Christmassy post instead! Orders We’ve been harassing customers to get their Christmas orders [...]

We have updated the hours on the right hand side of the website.  But to reiterate… The Café The café will be operating as usual up to Friday 23rd December.  It is then closed until Tuesday 10th January.  We apologise for any inconvenience and will see all you good people of Wivenhoe in the new [...]

Winter time is soup time

Winter seems to be late; it’s cold but still not cold.  Regardless of the temperature, the seasons have changed and we switched over (a couple of months ago actually) from summer salads to winter soups. The soups are made right here in the Deli kitchen – zero ‘food miles’ (that’s not exactly how it works, [...]

Beg your puddin’?

We’ve put out Katie’s Mum’s Christmas puds at long last.  And these aren’t just any puddings (thanks a lot M&S for turning that phrase into a cliché), we make them ourselves and they’re tasty as heck.   Okay, Katie’s Mum does most of the work but we help! There’s a selection of sizes that will [...]

A taste of Christmas

Adnams now produce spirits and their range is of exceptional quality.  They are coming by on Saturday, 3rd of December to do a tasting with their spirits.  They’ll set up a little stand in the deli and you can pop in, try a bit of booze and have a chat with them about what they [...]

A little extra for your Christmas…

With almost all of the Christmas stock now in, the only thing that remains for us to do is make it easier for you to buy the stuff.  One of the best ways we’ve found is to offer up gift certificates for both the delicatessen and the café (or tearoom, whatever). This year we’re offering [...]

Christmas is a coming…

We’ve now had the lion’s share of our Christmas deliveries in.  There’s a great selection of christmassy chocolates, snacks and gift packs.  Also, we were quite excited when Adnams delivered some Sloe Gin and some of their Winter Spiced Liqueur.  Yes, that’s right, Adnams do a lot of stuff that isn’t beer.  In fact Adnams [...]
